Our weekly cold-water dips came to an abrupt end at the start of lockdown. Government guidelines about open water swimming during lockdown were quite vague/non-existent, but the local harbour authorities where we live, and the RNLI, issued statements advising people not to go into the water because of the risk of emergency services being unnecessarily deployed to rescue swimmers. Many of the places Rachel and I had been swimming all winter were miles away from any form of help from emergency services, so we had always been swimming at our own risk. But we heeded the advice and didn't even get our toes wet between the middle of March and the middle of May.

The 'stay at home' rule meant we couldn't even justify visiting nearby beaches. Also, beaches were classified as public spaces, where people were discouraged from meeting. Instead, we did all of our walks, runs and bike rides from home. To begin with, it was a little frustrating having so many incredible beaches nearby, yet tantalisingly out of reach – particularly considering the glorious weather we had for March, April and May. But we knew the beaches would still be there when restrictions eased, and we also knew how fortunate we were to have so many other options on our doorstep. After two Januarys of running different 10ks every day – mostly from home – it was fun to take the kids down many of the lanes and footpaths they had never explored, although they didn't share the same excitement on seeing them for the first time that I had. Thankfully Ludo did.
